Following the Noto Peninsula earthquake that struck on January 1, 2024, I have been engaged in philanthropic and volunteer efforts in the Hokuriku region, particularly in Noto. Through a fortunate convergence of circumstances, I have been able to apply insights gained over four years of research at the University of Tokyo—focusing on well-being and regional revitalization—to serve and support the local communities of Noto. By integrating the academic expertise of the University of Tokyo’s Graduate School of Public Policy (GraSPP) with that of the Japan Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (JAIST), and harnessing the entrepreneurial spirit of graduate students, we aim to foster sustained engagement with Noto through university-led startups. In doing so, we hope to contribute not only to the growth of Noto’s relational population but also to addressing the broader societal challenge of Tokyo-centric concentration that affects Japan as a whole.
